Need advice from Mac users [May. 30th, 2008|11:30 am]

Thelightofmylife's Mac started making horrible noises last night and flashing the "no boot disk available" icon. The sounds make me think the hard drive is the problem and since I replaced it within the last 6 months, that doesn't surprise me.
However, I'm sick of working on it and I'm suspecting that the hard drive needs professional help so I need recommendations for Mac repair shops in Portland especially if they are likely to be able to handle toasted drives. Otherwise, I'll have to pull the drive and go with one of the high-end recovery companies I know of.

Mac Force - mostly retail, have a cheezy and fun spaceship theme to the store. I've never used them for repairs, but I expect they do them.

The Mac Store

The Apple Store - official Apple repair, do you have Applecare?

Those are the ones I know.

Apple Store - don't have Applecare and they seem to charge a fuck of a lot and I don't really like their attitudes... "we charge $80 just to open the case and won't consider other possible issues until we try the expensive one that we think is likely"

Partially it's that we have to do the damn HD recovery as well.

Well, I guess I'd call around. There are other places that are a bit more mom and pop, but from what I can tell, $75-80/hour is standard labor for mac specialist places.
